چکیده

Previous research has found no effects of divided attention (DA) in the Word Fragment Completion Task (WFC) when only one legitimate solution was allowed for each fragment. In two experiments a short-term memory load paradigm was used to vary attention during encoding, and fragments were constructed to have unique or multiple solutions. Results demonstrate that DA can reduce perceptual priming when the presentation is blocked rather than mixed, and the study time is sufficiently brief. However, the degree of impairment was not greater for multiple fragments, nor it was modulated by test-awareness. Possible explanations are discussed.

The effects of attention on perceptual implicit memory.

Reports on the effects of dividing attention at study on subsequent perceptual priming suggest that perceptual priming is generally unaffected by attentional manipulations as long as word identity is processed. We tested this hypothesis in three experiments by using the implicit word fragment completion and word stem completion tasks. Division of attention was instantiated with the Stroop task ...

Using the speeded word fragment completion task to examine semantic priming.

The present research investigates semantic priming with an adapted version of the word fragment completion task. In this task, which we refer to as the speeded word fragment completion task, participants need to complete words such as lett_ce (lettuce), from which one letter was omitted, as quickly as possible. This paradigm has some interesting qualities in comparison with the traditionally us...

Filling the gaps: A speeded word fragment completion megastudy.

In the speeded word fragment completion task, participants have to complete fragments such as tom_to as quickly and accurately as possible. Previous work has shown that this paradigm can successfully capture subtle priming effects (Heyman, De Deyne, Hutchison, & Storms Behavior Research Methods, 47, 580-606, 2015). In addition, it has several advantages over the widely used lexical decision tas...

Priming in word stem completion tasks: comparison with previous results in word fragment completion tasks

This study investigates priming in an implicit word stem completion (WSC) task by analyzing the effect of linguistic stimuli characteristics on said task. A total of 305 participants performed a WSC task in two phases (study and test). The test phase included 63 unique-solution stems and 63 multiple-solution stems. Analysis revealed that priming (mean = 0.22) was stronger in the case of multipl...
